It is often said that we show our true nature at the moment of our deaths. Whether we accept it, try to fight against it, or cry out for help, what we do and feel when we die often translates to what kind of pony we were. For Spitfire, her nature showed nothing more than a will to serve and a will to fight, even against the inevitable.
A routine scouting mission into the heart of Mount Gloom turned into a disaster as the volcano erupted without warning, leaving Spitfire as the only survivor. Barely, as the corrupting flames of Mount Gloom began eating into her body. Spitfire, horribly burned yet unwilling to let the volcano’s heat take her, pushed herself to the limit to reach Appleloosa before the cloud of fire and brimstone, before crash landing. Her body can no longer take it: She was dying. She never regretted her final actions, for she has completed her duty until the very end.
As Spitfire laid gasping on the bridge, Princess Celestia and her phoenix, Philomeena, arrived to the scene sensing the commotion. Philomeena looked to Spitfire, and saw a familiar burning soul within her. Before anyone else could act, Philomeena shed a tear in the mouth of the gasping Spitfire. In a matter of seconds, Spitfire’s body began to glow with the radiance of a sun, and when it dissipated her body was made anew.
The burns were gone, along with the corrupting sickness of the chaotic fire. Her mane, once golden with the hue of a sun, actually shone like a sun, infused with the primordial flame of the immortal phoenix along with something more. For that day did not just mark the day a pony defied death, but also the day a pegasus joined with the flame of the fundamental. The carrier of the spirit of fire, the ember spirit arose from the ashes of death. And like a star above the heavens, it was ready to burn those that stood in the way of the light.
