The shadow is said to be the manifestation of one’s true feelings towards the world, and also of one’s true desires, and everypony no matter how brave or pure had such a subconscious feeling; Pinkie Pie’s however was much more sinister.

Pinkie Pie was all alone in what should have been one of the happiest days of her year: her birthday. Her friends had not shown up to her wonderful, spectacular, fabulous, and stupendous birthday party, and she was left alone in her house with nothing but lots of party decorations, a bunch wooden chairs, and a single table. Not even her closest friends were here to enjoy the fun atmosphere or her bubbly company. With despair and solidarity leaning ever closer into Pinkie’s heart, her mind began to fill in the empty chairs for her.

In her mind, a voice spoke to her, “Is this not what you wanted Pinkie dear?”
As she spoke, Pinkie began to see the outlines of her friends in what were once empty chairs. They then spoke back in unison, “Great party Pinkie, and don’t worry we’ll never leave you alone again.”

Even though she knew that this was not real, Pinkie’s mind denied that her friends had never been there. In one hoof towards insanity, she began to enjoy the party with these new ‘friends’, speaking to them as if they were real. It wasn’t until Rainbow Dash came through her door that Pinkie’s conscious mind began to parse back clear reality from her foggy insane fantasy.

It is said that the mind of Pinkie Pie is something so profoundly, and incoherently, enigmatic that to try to understand it would be the equivalent of attempting to light a candle at the summit of an exploding ice-cream volcano, fundamentally impossible. Because of this, when Pinkie Pie left her makeshift party, she also left something else behind.

It called itself: Mercurial. It was the voice that helped Pinkie through her lonely party. A violet, phantom born from the subconscious of Pinkie’s true thoughts of hatred and contempt for her friends. It decided that it would become Pinkie’s only friend, eliminating those that it thought pretended to be her friends. And when they were all gone, Mercurial would give that feeling of euphoria, the one of the imaginary party, back to Pinkie Pie before she devoured what would be left of her sanity and leaving Pinkie braindead.

Anyone that stood in the way of its goal, would be devoured by the same despair that filled Pinkie long ago.
